St. Vladimir Order Military 4 class Solid Gold

Date added Friday, 11 April 2008

The Order of St.Vladimir was instituted in 1782, originally as a civil order of merit, such as for life saving or famine relief. There were four classes, corresponding to Knights Grand Cross, Knights Commanders, Commanders and Companions. There was also a medal of the Order. The Order was originally instituted as a civil decoration, and could be claimed by "whoever at the peril of his own life saves ten lives from fire or water", had served the state loyally and faithfully for 35 years, who enriched the state, compiled any work of classical destinction, had rendered assistance in time of famine or had done anything really notable in his profession. During the Crimean War it was also made into a military Order and was awarded for military merit as well with the addition of swords and a bow on the ribbon. The military badge "with swords" had two swords placed crosswise between the limbs of the cross. To be included in the Order of St. Vladimir (of any class) also granted the recipient hereditary noble rank. After 1826, only the Order of St. George shared this distinction. A person would be awarded the order's lowest class for the first heroic act. A second meritorious act could be rewarded with the next higher class and so on. Usually only the badge of the highest class was worn. If a recipient had been awarded a lower class with swords, for valor in battle, crossed swords would be set between the cross arms. If the recipient went on to be awarded a higher class, but in peace time, small crossed swords would be set across the upper cross arm. Qualification for the Order This Order is awarded to officers for acts that help further the Club such as training recuits, recruiting new members, helping with administrative duties, etc. This Order (each class) is worth 5 points. Made from solid gold it's dated approx. 1890-1910.
